When it comes to creating engaging scavenger hunts for team-building and events, four scavenger hunt apps stand out: PlayTours, Goosechase, Actionbound, and Loquiz. We decided to put them to the test, creating the same game structure on each scavenger hunt app to see how well they support customization and branding.
To evaluate the customization and branding capabilities of these most popular scavenger hunt apps, we created a game for made-up brand, Grid Cosmetics, a company hosting a team retreat at the beach for team-building and relaxation. The game included missions such as building a human pyramid, solving a product placement puzzle, and creating a promotional poster using only beach materials. Grid Cosmetics has its own brand colors and fonts, so we aimed to customize each app as much as possible to align with the company’s branding. Let's see which app is the king of customization!
PlayTours stands out as the most brandable and customizable scavenger hunt app on the market. The level of customization is unmatched by other apps. You can customize it to the point where it feels like the game was made from scratch for your company, without players ever knowing you used a third-party app. It allows you to effortlessly develop immersive games that reflect your brand, creating a seamless and personalized experience for players.
One of the standout features of PlayTours is that it requires no app download or installation. Players simply click a link and start playing on the web. The brandless white-label URL (pyts.link) is designed to look like a redirection link, maintaining a neutral branding that keeps the focus on your company.
PlayTours allows you to easily add your company logo to the game welcome page, making the game feel more personalized. You can also customize the colors of the start button and game background, enhancing the branding of your game in ways that other scavenger hunt apps cannot match.
PlayTours offers the ability to set a custom background for each chapter of the game. You can click on "Add custom background" under each chapter and select an image that fits its mood. The best part is you can choose stock images directly from the PlayTours platform, eliminating the need to browse the internet for suitable images.
Taking branding to the next level, PlayTours allows you to set a custom font. If your brand has a specific font, you can apply it to the game, making it look like it was tailored specifically for your company.
Finally, you can redirect players back to your company's page after the game by changing the "Redirect URL" field under the ending section. This feature helps keep the conversation going even after the game has ended.
Goosechase is another popular scavenger hunt app that is known for its fun and interactive features, but it falls short when it comes to customization and branding.
Unlike PlayTours, Goosechase does not allow for font or color changes. This limitation makes it challenging to fully align the game with your brand’s aesthetic.
For branding, you can add a logo photo that shows for 5 seconds when participants first join the game. However, this logo image doesn’t stick around for the entire duration of the game, unlike with PlayTours.
Goosechase does allow you to include custom terms of service, such as permission to be contacted or a photo release form. You can also share public links like website URLs or PDF Google Drive links, which can be helpful.
Actionbound is known for its user-friendly interface and simplicity, but it lacks the robust customization options found in PlayTours.
Actionbound does not provide options to customize colors, change backgrounds, or add logos. This limitation significantly reduces its potential for branding.
The only notable branding feature in Actionbound is the ability to upload pictures from your device to show in the tasks. However, the user interface is simple and outdated, which might not be appealing for those looking to create a polished, modern, branded experience.
Loquiz offers some interesting features for scavenger hunts, but its customization options are limited and can be confusing from the creator’s perspective.
In Loquiz, you can add pictures and task descriptions, which are shown alongside GPS map locations in the player’s view. However, the interface for creators can be a bit confusing, making it less user-friendly compared to other apps.
When it comes to customization and branding, PlayTours is in a league of its own. It offers various options to help you create a game that is truly unique to your brand. From custom fonts and backgrounds to seamless redirects to your company page, PlayTours allows you to make the game feel entirely your own, something the other apps simply cannot match. If you want a fully branded and customizable scavenger hunt experience, PlayTours is the clear choice, with an affordable pricing plan.
